Workers deserve 100% of their wages. They should not be impoverished due to coronavirus.

In the UK, low-wage and insecure hospitality workers are facing job losses because of the crisis. The government stepped in with wage support – but the workers I’ve spoken with explained how 80% of what was already a poverty wage is not enough to pay the bills and ensure there’s food on the table.

Today, workers at Wetherspoons, McDonald’s and other hospitality and fast food companies are launching their campaign for employers to guarantee 100% of their wages. Will you stand with them and demand that big companies pay up?

The Covid-19 pandemic has laid-bare inequalities and injustices around the world. Big business such as Amazon and supermarkets see it as a lucrative opportunity even as their workers walk out in multiple countries over safety fears. For millions of “essential” workers, the pandemic has brought worry about their safety and struggles to get protective equipment. For millions of others, lockdown has meant no work to go to, lay-offs and reduced pay.

However, workers around the world are coming together in unions to demand safety and protect their livelihoods against profit-hungry employers.

Wetherspoons workers in the Bakers’ Food and Allied Workers Union – the ‘Spoonstrike’ – united and pushed their employer to U-turn, agreeing to pay them until the government’s wage support kicks in.

They were facing weeks without income, and no way to pay rent or bills. Their actions show us how solidarity can help us support each other through this pandemic and stop it from making our society more unequal.

So show your solidarity with UK hospitality and fast food workers. Their employers can afford to top up the 80% the government is paying and ensure these workers get the 100% they deserve. Please email the CEOs of these companies and demand they do the right thing.

When workers come together they have the power to drive transformational change that can prioritise our planet and the wellbeing of all. We must support all workers around the globe as they demand justice from their employers.

P.S. Watch and share the video of workers speaking out, explaining why they need 100% pay.
